Less than a year after the death of Arben Mici inside the police premises, the prosecutor's office of Tirana brought charges against two officers who, at the end of the investigation, were handed over as defendants for abuse of duty.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, police officers Fatmir Isufi and Hajredin Boja, who were damaged by the fire that engulfed the rooms where the detainees were kept, violated the regulations when they allowed the 26-year-old prohibited items in a detention room, with which the victim, after lighting a cigarette, was set the mattresses on fire.

This accusation against the police is supported by the lighter that was found in the pocket of the deceased, who was arrested for domestic violence and who, within a few hours of his arrest, came out dead from police station number 5.

In the file, the Prosecution does not take any lenient position towards the suspected policemen, despite the fact that according to the two witnesses, they went into the flames to get the suspects out and even one of them was injured.

According to the prosecution, the two policemen also influenced the violation of a 2006 law on the use of tobacco.

As an argument, the Prosecution adds the finding of many cigarette butts that should not be smoked in office premises.

On the other hand, the prosecution brings the testimony of another detainee named Dilaver Idrizi, who was injured during the fire that engulfed the police station.

He says he saw the victim, Arben Mici, who was continuously smoking cigarettes.

"I don't know who lit his cigarette, but at one point he came to my room with a cigarette. I told him that I couldn't stand the smoke and he ran away, then I heard screams, smoke and flames that spread", testified the arrested person for the Prosecutor's Office.

For three others, the Prosecutor's Office closed the investigation as the accusation was unproven./ TCH
