It is suspected that someone is selling the data of nearly 500 million WhatsApp users. Cybernews confirms the news.
On November 16, a person posted an ad on a popular hacking community forum, claiming that they were selling a 2022 database of 487 million mobile numbers of WhatsApp users. The data is supposed to contain data of WhatsApp users from 84 countries, among them is Albania. This person claims that over 32 million US user data was compromised.
Another large share of phone numbers belong to citizens of Egypt (45 million), Italy (35 million), Saudi Arabia (29 million), France (20 million) and Turkey (20 million).
The data for sale is also suspected of having nearly 10 million phone numbers of Russian citizens and over 11 million of UK citizens.
In Albania, they claim to have telephone numbers of 506,602 people.
One person told Cybernews that they were selling US data for $7,000, UK data for $2,500 and Germany for $2,000.
Such information is mostly used by attackers for phishing attacks to ask users for personal information such as credit card numbers, so users should be wary of any calls from unknown numbers, spam calls and messages .
WhatsApp is reported to have more than two billion monthly active users globally. Upon request, WhatsApp's database vendor shared a sample of data with Cybernews researchers. There were 1,097 UK and 817 US user numbers in the pooled sample.
Cybernews investigated all the numbers included in the sample and managed to confirm that all of them are, in fact, WhatsApp users.
The vendor did not specify how they obtained the database, suggesting they "used their own strategy" to collect the data, and assured Cybernews that all the numbers in the sample belong to active WhatsApp users.
