George Foreman, one of boxing's greatest heavyweight legends, has died at the age of 76, according to an announcement made by his family.

Known in the ring as “Big George,” the American boxer has built an extraordinary and enduring career, winning the Olympic gold medal in 1968 and the world heavyweight title twice. He is the only boxer to have achieved world champion in this category after a 21-year period, being declared world champion at the age of 45, making him the oldest boxer to win the title in history.

Meanwhile, his famous 1974 bout with Muhammad Ali, at the “Rumble in the Jungle,” resulted in the loss of his first title. However, his professional career remains memorable, with a total of 76 wins, including 68 knockouts, a figure that is more than double Ali’s.

Foreman retired from boxing in 1997, but his name will continue to be known, as he decided to associate his name with a famous cooking grill, an investment that enriched him and provided him with a considerable fortune.

In a statement posted on Instagram Friday night, his family expressed their grief over the loss. “Our hearts are broken,” the family said in a post, describing Foreman as a “devout preacher, devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather.” The statement also noted that he was “a humanitarian, an Olympian and two-time world champion, a respected man, and a force for good.”

George Foreman was born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, and raised with six siblings by a single mother in a segregated part of America. After a difficult path that included petty crime, he found salvation and glory in the boxing ring. At the age of 19, he won the gold medal at the Mexico City Olympics, before turning professional and achieving an incredible record of 37 consecutive victories. During his career, Foreman lost only five fights.

A great departure for the world of sports, but a legacy that will live on forever.
