Elina Xhengo, European champion in javelin throwing, a 20-year-old girl born to Albanian parents, has not fully enjoyed the success of the European from Munich.

Even though she represented Greece and even waved the flag of the neighboring country at the European Championships where she also set a continental record as the youngest girl to win a title in this discipline, racist-based insulting messages due to her origin have not been absent.

"I received negative messages because I am originally from Albania ", Elina emphasizes in an interview for the national television ANT1.

"I made the first phone call to my parents because they believed a lot and expected this success. They feel the stress of my competitions and ask to take it away from me", adds Elina.

In the following, she underlines that only in the last few months she was provided with a Greek passport and she did not know if she would participate in the European Championships, but despite this fact she did not stop training. Asked by journalists about racism, she states:

"In the village where we live, I haven't felt it because people treat us very well. I have socialized quite well with all the residents there. After the race I received a lot of negative messages because of the origin. My parents were very angry with the fact that I was not able to compete at the international level due to the lack of a passport."

Elina was born in Greece in 2002 and is only 20 years old, but is considered the future of this discipline. Her parents emigrated many years ago and today she is considered the pride of Greece.

The media has devoted a lot of space to her, while the athlete herself humbly states that thanks to her achievement, she will be able to remove her mother from her job as a cleaner since she has sacrificed a lot for her until she was declared European champion.

Xengo is the European record holder in terms of the age of a female champion. The 20-year-old has broken the record set in 1962 by Elvira Ozolina, who was declared champion of the continent at the age of 23.
