14 minutes of added time

61 extra minutes in the first 4 matches of the World Cup. 10 extra minutes in the opening match of "Qatar 2022", 27 minutes in England-Iran, 11 in Senegal-Netherlands and 13 in USA-Wales, not counting extra time in Argentina-Saudi Arabia and Denmark-Tunisia.

Extra minutes that we are not used to seeing in football matches, but in the World Cup have become common, as FIFA President Gianni Infantino had warned.

In an interview for "BeIN Sports", in April, Infantino explained: "We have to reflect on the effective time of the game. In every match there is a lot of wasted time. There is a need to review things as spectators pay to watch 90 minutes of football when 50 minutes are actually played. I'm not saying that the game should last 100 minutes, but obviously the extra time awarded by the referee should coincide with the minutes lost during the game".

Even Pierluigi Collina, the legendary former referee and head of the FIFA Referees Commission, explained what is behind this practice of referees in the show of world football.

Collina said that "matches with an effective time of only 42 minutes" should be avoided.

"At the World Cup in Russia, the lost time was exactly compensated. This is how it should happen now", he said and continued:

"If we were to see three goals, and each celebration lasts about a minute and a half, with that you have already lost five minutes," explained the legendary Italian referee.

However, this does not apply to VAR:

"I'm not talking about VAR, it's different. The video assistant calculates it accurately. Even when I was a referee, when the information about compensation came from the fourth referee, you don't think about it because you follow what is happening. The fourth referee suggests the duration of the compensation and the referee takes the decision himself", concluded Collina, Gazzetta dello Sport reports.
