Since the day he retired from football, Gareth Bale has dedicated himself to something else, cultivating his true passion: golf.
He only recently returned to a football field in South Korea during a charity match between legends. With the end of his playing career, the pharaonic salaries of the clubs that held his card also ended. A normal situation, which nevertheless seems to worry the Welshman, who is afraid of the possibility of running out of money.
Even without real signs, the idea of ??bankruptcy seems to terrify Bale. The lack of knowledge to break away from the same standard of living as when his income was in the millions can lead players to lose everything they have gained over time, which is why many try to find an alternative future as soon as they hang up their boots. A principle around which the concept of knowing how to invest and renew revolves, starting, however, in a privileged way, from a solid financial base.
Although the Welshman has invested part of his income, this does not calm him down about the idea of ??being left without money. On the contrary, only the thought: "It has always worried me", as he confessed to Front Office Sport. Although he is only 36 years old, Bale will not play again from 2022, after his farewell after his last appearances with the national team at the World Cup in Qatar. On the one hand, he has earned millions in his career, on the other hand, he has spent millions on clubs that have wanted to secure his card. The move from Tottenham to Real Madrid marked a record in the history of the football market and made him Mr 100 million, based on the price of his transfer from England to Spain.
"There are stories of professional athletes who, as soon as they leave the sport, end up bankrupt. They don't know how to manage their money and I assume they live in luxury, which I try not to do," Bale confessed, speaking about concerns about his future. The former striker is spending his "retirement" on other types of terrain, those of golf courses. A passion that he had even before he left football and that now, with more free time, he is enjoying to the fullest.
Although the fear has not completely disappeared, Bale says he has found a way to mitigate it: "I have tried to diversify my investments. From the beginning I had this idea: to invest in different areas, in different things. By doing this, if something goes wrong, my hypothetical palace does not collapse, but has other foundations that keep it standing."
How much has Bale earned during his career?
With a net worth of around $150 million, Bale seems far from the risk of bankruptcy. The exact figure cannot be known for sure and those reported are only estimates, but the total accumulated is not small. Suffice it to think that in 2016 the player signed a renewal with Real Madrid of 165 million euros gross for six years, that is, until 2022. With the move to MLS, the highest American league, the figures were significantly reduced, going to around 1 million and 600 thousand euros. Contributing factors were also the advanced stage of his career and the player's desire to move to Los Angeles, the team's headquarters, which facilitated the negotiations.
