Union Berlin makes history by appointing Marie-Louise Eta as the first female coach of a men's team in the Bundesliga.

The decision comes at a critical moment for the team, which is battling to secure survival in German football's top flight. The 34-year-old takes over after the sacking of Steffen Baumgart, who left along with his staff following a 3-1 defeat at bottom-placed Heidenheim.

Eta, who previously coached the men's U-19 team at Union Berlin, was set to take over the women's team from next season. However, an emergency situation in the first team led to her immediate promotion. She has already made history, having become the first female assistant in the Bundesliga and Europe's top five leagues in 2023.

Union Berlin currently ranks 11th out of 18 teams, just seven points clear of the relegation zone, where St. Pauli is located.

With only five games left until the end of the season, Eta will have a difficult mission to keep the team in the elite. The first challenge for the new coach will be facing Wolfsburg, another team involved in the battle for survival, in a match that is expected to be decisive for the fate of the season.
