What happened to Zidane? Missing for 3 years: He would only return for these two
Zinedine Zidane

It was May 22, 2021 when Zinedine Zidane sat on the Real Madrid bench for the last time, in a match won by the Merengues against Villarreal. The paths of the French coach and the Madrid club parted ways shortly after, but no one would have thought that after more than 3 years, Zizou would still be without a team.

But what happened to the former number 10 of the French National Team?

Many people ask this question, but few know the exact answer. Spanish newspaper Marca has tried to shed light on the case, calling it “the story of a successful coach who has not stepped on the bench for more than three years, as if he had quietly given up a profession in which he achieved excellence with Real Madrid.”

The French coach led Real Madrid in two different periods: from January 2016 to June 2018 initially, and then from March 2019 to June 2021. During these 5 years with the Merengues, he won eleven trophies: 2 Spanish championships (2017, 2020), 2 Spanish Super Cups (2017, 2020), 3 Champions Leagues (2016, 2017, 2018), 2 European Super Cups (2016, 2017) and 2 Club World Cups (2016, 2017). “A spectacular CV that until recently made him the second most successful coach in the history of Real Madrid,” writes Marca. “Three Champions Leagues in a row are football history. But Zizou has disappeared and not for lack of offers.”

Offers that, according to the Spanish newspaper, have not been lacking, even from prestigious clubs: "Manchester United, Juventus, PSG and Bayern have knocked on his door several times in recent years, as have some of the best teams in the world. But Zidane always answers the same: no, thank you". Currently, Zidane lives in Madrid and occasionally travels to France, to Paris or near Marseille.

Has he given up on training?

According to Marca, no, but Zidane would only return to the bench for Real Madrid or the French national team: "Only a truly innovative project could make him reconsider his stance, but so far that has not happened. We emphasize: Bayern, Manchester United and Juventus, among many others, have knocked on the door and he has rejected them all. Zidane, who has recovered good relations with Florentino Perez, is aware that the Real Madrid bench is impossible. He no longer thinks about it. There is nothing new with France either, since Deschamps has renewed until the 2026 World Cup. So Zidane is taking it easy."

Meanwhile, Zizou is also "alone", as his old staff has dispersed and followed different paths: his assistant, David Bettoni, manages Club Africain in Tunisia, and with him is his latest fitness trainer, Professor Gregory Dupont; Hamidou Msaidie is the CEO of a company called Slowmotions, a personal training platform; the goalkeeper coach, Roberto Vazquez, works for the Spanish Football Federation.

Alone and without a team, but more for choices than for other reasons. The door for a major return to football remains open, but for the moment only for two options that are difficult to realize.
