Those who are surprised by the crisis that has engulfed the reigning English champions, Manchester City, have not listened to what Michael Owen said in August, when, before the season started, everyone was predicting Pep Guardiola's team for a second consecutive title.
Today, however, City are in free fall, with embarrassing results, growing uncertainty and no solution in sight. But this was all predicted by the former Golden Boy of international football.
Owen's prophecy, which is now becoming a nightmare for Manchester City, resonates as a warning and for Citizens fans it seems like a curse: "Manchester City will suffer and it will be difficult for them to finish in the top four this season."
Today, these words are on everyone's lips ahead of the decline of the City team, which is almost unrecognizable both in the Premier League and in other competitions, with a season that seems to have been compromised since December.
However, these words were spoken in the summer, when everyone was sure of another dominant season from the Manchester team. But they were spoken by Owen on August 16: "The title is in the hands of Manchester City, but I think this year they can stumble."
At the time, everyone thought he was crazy, but now his prophecy seems more and more accurate. "Last year they were very strong when they needed to be and they made an incredible journey, but at some point they will fail this year."

Three reasons why Owen no longer believed in Guardiola's City
Owen listed three main reasons for his distrust of Pep Guardiola's team: the end of the cycle, legal problems and stronger competitors.
Firstly, Owen believed that Guardiola's era as a manager had peaked, a view that is now increasingly accepted.
Secondly, the club's legal problems have weighed heavily on the team's morale, as the accusations against them could result in severe punishments, and could even result in relegation to lower divisions if found guilty.
Thirdly, Owen had seen Arsenal as a main contender for the title, along with Liverpool and Aston Villa: after 17 games, the Gunners are in third place, 6 points behind the Reds, who are first in the table, with one game in hand.
Citizens' rapid decline: 9 losses in last 12 games
Owen was the first and only one who did not believe in another “replay” of a dominant season by Guardiola and his team, while everyone else was betting on an exciting season. Instead, since December, City has been healing its wounds: a few days ago, they repeated another Premier League defeat, 2-1 against Aston Villa, deepening their crisis even further. In the last 12 matches in all competitions, Manchester City, the reigning Premier League champions, have won only once, with 9 losses and 2 draws.
