Carlo Ancelotti has been sentenced to a year in prison for tax fraud.

The Brazil coach has been found guilty of tax fraud dating back to 2014, when he was in charge of Real Madrid.

He was accused of concealing income related to his image rights.

But he has been cleared of another possible tax offence committed in 2015, also related to the collection of his image rights while employed by Real Madrid.

Despite the verdict, Ancelotti is unlikely to serve a prison sentence.

Under Spanish law, any sentence under two years for a non-violent crime rarely requires a defendant with no prior convictions to serve a prison sentence.

The 66-year-old was accused of defrauding the tax office to avoid paying almost 1 million euros in income tax.

Ancelotti had vehemently denied any wrongdoing, but the former Milan coach had previously paid less tax.

He admitted that he had not paid his fair share of taxes in 2014, but blamed his accountants' errors for the move.

Ancelotti is adamant that he did not break the law, claiming that he did not spend the required 183 days in Spain to pay taxes.

Similarly, Barcelona legend Lionel Messi and his father Jorge were convicted of tax fraud of over €4 million between 2007 and 2009.

In 2016, the Argentine was sentenced to 21 months in prison for using tax havens to hide his income from image rights.

But he ended up paying a fine of more than 300,000 euros instead.
