Pope Leo XIV has cast his vote in next week's US midterm elections, reportedly becoming the first sitting pope to vote in a secular and democratic electoral process, the Vatican announced today.
The first American pope "cast his vote by mail in Chicago ," a Vatican statement said.
"The Holy Father expresses his conviction that citizens have the right and duty to participate in democratic processes ," it further adds.
Michael Walsh, a British historian and expert on papal affairs, said the participation could be unprecedented.
"I don't believe popes have ever voted before in a democratic electoral process ," he told CNN.
As a U.S. citizen, Papa Leoni is registered to vote in New Lenox, a Chicago suburb where his brother, John, lives, according to voter records.
Early voting and voting by mail are common practice in US elections, depending on local laws, as American elections are administered by individual states and not by the federal government in Washington.
Before becoming Pope Leo in May 2025, the man born Robert Francis Prevost participated in both the Republican and Democratic primaries and voted in the 2024 US presidential election, according to official records.
Since taking office as Pope, Leo has consistently encouraged civic engagement, including calls for people to express their opinion regarding the US and Israel's war against Iran.
He has publicly clashed with the Trump administration over its handling of the conflict, as well as its restrictive immigration policies.
