Rama on protests: Violence must be punished, any claim of excessive force by the

Prime Minister Edi Rama and the European Union Ambassador to Albania, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, held a joint press conference this Thursday, a day after the publication of the European Commission's progress report on Albania.

During his speech, Rama also focused on the part of the report that addresses the protests of recent months in the country.

The Prime Minister said that the report highlights violence during protests, but also mentions allegations of excessive use of force by the police. He underlined that the right to protest must always be guaranteed and that violence must be morally and legally punished, while any allegations of excessive force by state authorities must be examined.

"The report also addresses recent protests, pointing to the scourge of violence but also citing allegations of excessive use of force by the police, while underlining that dialogue is the path we should all seriously engage in. No finding of the progress report can be overlooked. The right to protest must be guaranteed, violence must be morally and legally punished, and any claim of excessive force by state authorities must be seriously examined," said Rama.

He added that the governing majority has a special responsibility to enable dialogue, especially with parts of society that have different opinions.

"Dialogue is a condition for democratic coexistence. We, the governing majority, have a special responsibility to enable dialogue, especially with parts of society that think differently from us," said Rama.

The head of government also emphasized that the country's progress and the problems it faces must be seen simultaneously, without allowing one to overshadow the other.

"Real problems should not prevent us from making real progress, and progress should not blind us to problems," he said.
