Prime Minister Edi Rama said tonight that there will be consultations on how to handle the issue of the Tirana Municipality, given that its mayor, Erion Veliaj, is in detention. 

Asked whether Veliaj will continue to be mayor of Tirana, Rama said that this remains to be seen.

He said he has sought several opinions to understand how the municipality's case should be handled, i.e. whether there will be early elections, or whether to wait until the court issues a decision on Veliaj.

Will Erion Veliaj continue to be mayor of Tirana?

Edi Rama: I don't know, we'll see about that later. I don't know. 

So will there be early elections in Tirana or will it be waited until the court makes a decision?

Edi Rama: I don't know, I wanted to see a range of opinions. Not one, but several opinions to understand how this should be handled.

Erion Veliaj has been held in custody since February 10 of this year. Veliaj is accused by SPAK of "passive corruption" in at least nine cases and was recently charged with concealing assets, charges which he has denied.

In the same criminal file, SPAK is also investigating his wife, Ajola Xoxa, as well as 4 other businessmen.

Since the moment of his arrest, Rama has placed Anuela Ristan at the head of the municipality.
