The retired American diplomat and former ambassador of the OSCE mission, William Walker, also spoke about the process of negotiations between Kosovo and Serbia. Walker has said that talks between the two countries have been going on for a long time and that there is very little progress.
Walker said that everyone understands that Kosovo wants normalization of relations, but it seems that Serbia does not want such a thing.
The veteran of American diplomacy has said that Vucic and Serbia, by refusing to recognize Kosovo, want to drag out the negotiation process indefinitely and want the international community to put pressure on Kosovo. Walker says that it seems that the West is putting pressure on Kosovo but not on Serbia, so he adds that he is not very optimistic about the negotiations.
"They have been going on for a long time with very little progress. And again Vuqiç and Serbia and their refusal to recognize Kosovo, you know, will drag the process forever. I think that everyone understands that Kosovo wants to normalize relations, wants to make peace in the region and Serbia apparently does not. Serbia seems to want to drag it out and make the international community put pressure on Kosovo, and they are doing it, but they don't seem to be putting strong pressure on Serbia. So I'm not very optimistic about the negotiation process," Walker told Express.
Walker further said that he cannot understand why Kosovo is under EU sanctions, when it is a democratic state with a functioning democracy like any other state in Europe or the world.
He said that if a case similar to the one with Sandulović in Serbia were to happen in Kosovo, investigations would be carried out and responsibility would be brought to justice.
The American diplomat also mentioned the political processes and the elections, saying that in Kosovo those who lose the elections vacate their offices. He said that in Serbia, Aleksander Vučić wants to stay in power for a long time.
In the end, he says that the difference between Kosovo and Serbia is very big and it is incomprehensible that Kosovo is under sanctions.
"You are under sanctions, which I do not understand. Kosovo is a functional, democratic democracy like any other country in Europe or the world. The Justice System works. If someone was caught and beaten by the police in Kosovo, it would be investigated and those who did it would be brought to justice. So I'm saying that the justice system in Kosovo works, the police system works, the voting system works, people who lose elections leave office. But Mr. Vucic seems to want to stay in power. The difference between the two countries is huge. And still it is Kosovo that is sanctioned and I just don't understand that", concluded William Walker.
