The name of Visar Zhiti, poet, intellectual, former ambassador and former political prisoner, is circulating in politics as one of the possible candidates for the post of president of Albania. It seems that this candidacy can find the support of all wings of Albanian politics.
In an exclusive reaction to VoxNews.al , the poet Visar Zhiti said: " I wish the best for my country and for the people! May their will be done "! This reaction of the poet seems like a positive sign that he will not say no to such a proposal, if there is political agreement.
Who is Visar Zhiti:
He was born in Durrës, the son of actor and poet Hekuran Zhiti. Visari grew up in Lushnja, where he finished high school in 1970. After graduating from the Higher Pedagogical Institute in Shkodra, he began his teaching career in the northern mountain town of Kukes, demonstrating an early interest in poetry. some of which were published in literary magazines.
In 1973 he prepared for compilation, "The Rhapsody of the Life of Roses". It was the time of the 4th Plenum of the Central Committee of the Labor Party in which Enver Hoxha started a fierce campaign against young people who liked Western culture.
Zhit's father had previously had a conflict with the authorities, and the young poet suddenly became one of the political victims of the dictatorship to intimidate Albanian intellectuals. The manuscript of his above-mentioned summary, which had been submitted for publication to the publishing house Naim Frashëri, was considered a creation with serious ideological errors and that promoted the socialist reality.
He was arrested on November 8, 1979 in Kukës. After being sentenced in a ridiculous trial in April 1980 to thirteen years in prison, he was sent to Tirana prison and later transferred to the infamous Spaç prison. Many of the inmates who were with him in prison died from ill-treatment, torture, and malnutrition or suffered mental disorders.
He was released from prison in early 1987 and "allowed" by the communist government to work in a brick factory in Lushnja. After the fall of the communist dictatorship in 1991, he managed to go to Italy where he worked in Milan until 1992. Through a scholarship from the Heinrich Boll Foundation, Zhiti went to Germany in 1993 and the following year went to the United States. .
