Former head of the Secret Service and well-known diplomat, Irakli Koçollari, revealed details from some of the American documents after the Second World War.
He stated on the Top Talk show that he had a secret Belgrade-Athens plan to invade Albania in 1952 and was stopped by the intervention of the Americans.
What could Albania do, after the Second World War, in relation to Greece?
Koçollari: At that time, our border forces dealt a very heavy blow to the Greek forces, as they thought they would have it very easy. In 1949, about 800 prisoners were captured by the Greek side, without talking here how many were killed and handed over to the Greek side a year later. Greece was hit very hard, it is a period that unfortunately has not been reflected much in history. There are historians, which is shameful in fact, who say that we were guilty of those provocations, when the Americans themselves say "no, the Albanians have taken a correct position".
They were the goals of the Greek side to realize those evil goals in the territories of South Albania. This is in 1949. After that year is another very interesting case from the secret documents of DASH. In 1952, we find documents that make it known that a small delegation of Yugoslav soldiers went to Greece after they had drawn up a plan for a military strike on Albania from the North.
It was September 1952. Thinking that the Greeks have certain claims of their own to the Albanian territories, they confidentially went and met the Greeks and told them "if we are going to strike militarily, where is the line that you claim, that let's not cross that line."
The Americans have found out. At the same time, the Americans summoned the Greek ambassador to Washington and the Yugoslav ambassador to the State Department. They told them "we learn that there is such a plan. The USA recognizes Albania as a member of the League of Nations, we are in favor of preserving the status quo of that country and we will react if the sovereignty of that country is affected".
