In Albania, the grouping of the Democratic Party led by Mr. Enkelejd Alibeaj withdrew today from the appeal made to the Court of Appeal against the decision of the Court of Tirana, which had not agreed to combine in a single file, the changes in the party's statute carried out in the two Assemblies called in 2021 by former president Lulzim Basha.
Another appeal filed by Mr. Alibeaj, against the decision of the Court of Tirana, last year, taken by Judge Agron Zhukri, which recognized the Assembly organized by former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his supporters as and the statute approved by this Assembly.
Indrit Sefa, the legal representative of Mr. Alibeaj, stated that today's decision to give up the first appeal aims to pave the way for examining the issue related to the legitimacy of the Assembly called by Mr. Berisha. "We believe that this act will remove all arguments from the Court to consider the appeal against the decision of Judge Zhukri in the shortest possible time, before the May 14 elections. The review of this issue is of fundamental importance to provide a final solution to the legal impasse in which the PD is located. We ask the Court of Appeal to consider this matter as soon as possible".
The former prime minister, for his part, reacted today by stating that it was precisely Mr. Alibeaj's lawyers who delayed the process, while emphasizing that "the decision of the Tirana Court is a final decision, which should automatically be registered in the register of political parties and the associations close to the association", accusing the influence, according to him, of Prime Minister Edi Rama for the situation.
The Court of Appeal has not yet set a date for the review of Judge Zhukri's decision, which also legally separates the Democratic Party. Mr. Berisha has taken control of the Party headquarters, but he has not been able to control the parliamentary group, whose chairman is known as Mr. Alibeaj./VOA
