Albania part of "Super Tuesday for EU enlargement"

The European Union's enlargement process will enter a new stage on July 14, when four Intergovernmental Conferences with candidate countries will be held, while Albania will close the first three negotiation chapters on its path to membership.

Following approval by the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the member states (COREPER), the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union described the development as another step forward in the enlargement process.

"Today, all EU Member States agreed to open Chapter 6 for Ukraine and Moldova, to close Chapters 8 and 29 for Montenegro, and Chapters 25, 26 and 30 for Albania, building a new momentum for enlargement," the Irish Presidency said in a statement.

The Irish Minister for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne, also described July 14 as a "Super Tuesday for European Union enlargement", announcing that he will chair the largest number of Intergovernmental Conferences held in one day since 2002.

Meanwhile, the President of the European Council, António Costa, welcomed the agreement for Ukraine and Moldova, calling it another step towards their membership in the European Union and evidence of the continued momentum of enlargement.

This development also received a reaction from Prime Minister Edi Rama.

"Albania does not stop. They said the negotiations were blocked; they said the NATO Summit was canceled; they said the government was overthrown; they said what they did not say and they will not leave anything unsaid, because their job is talk, while our word is work ," Rama wrote on social networks.

On July 14, during the ninth Albania-EU Intergovernmental Conference, Tirana will close Chapter 25 – Science and Research, Chapter 26 – Education and Culture, and Chapter 30 – External Relations, marking the first time since the opening of negotiations that Albania has closed negotiating chapters.
