State Department report: Western Balkans, a key front for US security and
US Department of State

The United States believes that the stability of the Western Balkans and the advancement of American economic interests in the region make the United States "more secure, stronger, and more prosperous," according to a new document from the US Department of State (DASH).

The report states that "unresolved disputes and remaining divisions undermine regional stability."

The document has been published on the official website of the State Department under the title "United States Policy for Promoting Stability and Prosperity in the Western Balkans" and fulfills a request from the US Congress for reporting on US policy in the region.

Regarding Kosovo, the document underlines that the US continues to encourage Pristina and Belgrade to make progress towards normalizing relations, with the aim of a lasting and mutually acceptable agreement. It also notes that US troops continue to be part of KFOR, which is considered key to guaranteeing security and freedom of movement in Kosovo.

The report also supports the transformation of the Kosovo Security Force into a professional territorial defense force, and mentions energy projects such as the modernization of coal capacities and the development of gasification.

The document identifies the Western Balkans as a region of direct importance to US security and economic interests, emphasizing a new American approach where the focus shifts from "state building" towards partnerships based on stability and mutual benefit.

Priorities include maintaining regional stability, countering the influence of Russia and China, expanding economic cooperation, investing in energy and infrastructure, fighting organized crime, and strengthening security cooperation.

According to the report, Russia and China are trying to exploit instability, corruption and weak governance in the region, while organized crime from the Western Balkans is considered a threat to US security, due to links to drug trafficking, money laundering and cybercrime. / Taken from REL
