Prime Minister Edi Rama showed some of his visions for higher education in Albania, to unite with that of the European Union countries.

During a meeting with rectors of Public and Non-Public Universities where he spoke about the process of ranking higher education institutions, Rama emphasized the fact that the University of Tirana could increase in ranking if it merged with the University of Medicine.

He emphasized that this thesis could cause controversy. Rama also said that branches such as Nursing or Law cannot be in all the universities of the country.

"It is very significant what we have today as a ground where the first fruits of the reform have begun to appear, which is the potential and availability of much more respectable academic capacities than what has been created for many years in a certain perception. I don't want to go into other details, but it is a process that we want to do together.

Together we must address a serious problem related to the second phase of the reform. We are talking about European synergy, which is one side, and for this the battle is the government's in international instances and the responsibility is mine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of Education, to convince the EU that it is time to take this fundamental step to the future of education and not to leave it together with others, something that will only happen when we become part of the EU, is the support of the entire fund of the EU system. Another element to increase appeal is having a certain number of universities under one umbrella. An example. I hope that this example does not turn into a reason not to turn into a controversy. The University of Tirana can grow rapidly in its ranking if it has Medicine within it. These are two separate universities. It is touching on medicine, which is one of the prides of our current academic system, for the product it produces. Which is shown by the fact that our graduates find themselves in EU systems without a problem.

Bringing other universities. It is not possible in such a small country with these potentials that we have, no matter how big we have, they are the potentials of a small country, to have a generalist university throughout the territory. To the fact that they are based on the need for direct financing, it adds water and flour, adding mediocrity while depriving themselves of the opportunity to be excellent in a certain direction. We are wasting time, years waiting for something that will never happen, for the universities to do it themselves. They are constrained by certain financial conditions related to the employment of that one.

As big visions and projects are trivialized in the field of a small country, we must be prepared and work in a direction that, without taking anything away from anyone, create conditions for everyone to benefit more, becoming attractive to the system of internal in European education. Why does this university do all these things? Having a narrow geography, having a territory in which it is clear that it can be profiled in 2-3 directions. Why should there be Law or Nursing in all of Albania? We have to face this. The way this system is, it doesn't get us very far. It makes certain branches and doors of universities less attractive, which are forced to lower the expectation for the quality of those they take. We will do what today seems utopia but is feasible.", Rama said.
