Rama: Let the EU turn its eyes away from us, we have less time than them
Edi Rama

From the Regional Transport Summit for strategic projects that took place in Tirana, Prime Minister Edi Rama also spoke about the Open Balkans meeting that will be held today and tomorrow in Ohrid.

"It's a day that starts here today with transport, road safety, sustainability of the development of our entire transport system and that continues in Ohrid with another Open Balkan Summit in order to move as fast as possible in order to achieve free movement of people of goods, capital and services and implementation as soon as possible of the 4 freedoms in the EU. These 4 freedoms are without question what is vital for us, what is vital for security in this region, what is vital for peace and conflict resolution in this area of Europe. "I am glad that today we have entered another phase thanks to the European development plan", said Rama.

The head of government has again demanded EU attention on the Western Balkans.

"To waste less time because we have no time to lose. We have much less time to lose than the time the EU has. The progress of the Western Balkans should be part of the attention and support of the structures of the European Union.

"Because waiting for several years for the Tirana-Durrës railway segment due to the bureaucracy in the European institutions creates frustration and goes against the great common goals and the great goal in itself of the European Union".

On 7 and 8, today and tomorrow, the next meeting for Open Balkan will take place. This time the leaders' meeting will take place in Ohrid, Northern Macedonia.

For the first time, the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Dritan Abazovic, will take part in it, arguing that this is an initiative that brings the Open Balkans closer to the European Union.

Today only informal meetings are foreseen, while the main works of this Summit take place on Wednesday. On the 8th, several agreements will be signed between the participating countries and a press conference will be held.

Regarding this meeting, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuçi. Said that "we are preparing great things for the citizens of Serbia, Albania and Northern Macedonia".

The "Open Balkans" initiative is a continuation of the Balkan "mini-Schengen", presented in Novi Sad, Serbia in October 2019, by Rama, Vucic and Zaev. After Montenegro joined, there are two countries that still have a critical attitude towards this initiative, Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
