Kathimerini: Athens is in consultation with Fredi Beleri, it is being requested
Edi Rama

The not very good relations between Albania and Greece continue to be in the center of attention in the Greek media.

The largest Greek newspaper "Kathimerini" writes today (December 29) that " Athens is waiting for Edi Rama's next move " as far as the Beleri case is concerned.

"Just before Christmas, Rama actually announced the dismissal of the acting mayor, Jorgo Goro, who lost to Fredi Beleri in the May elections, but continues to remain in office", writes the newspaper, which mentions three possible names that Rama had proposed for temporary mayor.

But after a reaction from Fredi Beleri, who articulated that the temporary chairman should be one of the councilors chosen from the results of May, the three names were cancelled, writes Kathimerini further.

We recall that the Greek side, in the written statement accompanying Albania's file in the various stages of its evaluation in the EU, has set three conditions for not vetoing: Beler's oath, his fair trial and respect for the presumption of innocence.

"Athens is definitely in consultation with Beleri, as a golden report is being sought in an issue that goes far beyond Greek-Albanian relations and, as has been seen recently, has also influenced the general discussion on the European perspective of the Western Balkans.

However, after the recent moves of Prime Minister Rama, some analysts and journalists in Albania believe that the Prime Minister is actually trying to pave the way for repeated elections in the Municipality of Himara", the article of the Hellenic newspaper further states.

These recent developments were preceded by a very intense diplomatic background and exchanges between Athens and Tirana at different levels.

The Greek daily quotes the Foreign Minister of Albania, Igli Hasani, who the day before at the conference with journalists said that "there are negotiations, ideas and commitments from both sides to find a solution".

Hasani denied that Tirana and Athens are discussing a " generally accepted name " for the temporary mayor of Himara.

According to the newspaper, the Albanian chief diplomat pointed out that "the decision of the special court is being examined by the government and all the steps that will lead to a situation that will create a long-term and reliable solution are being examined."
