Former MP Halit Valteri, in his reaction to Ilir Meta's accusations, wished the latter not to have the fate of former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader.

"Dear Like, I sincerely hope that you don't become like Ivo Sanader, the former prime minister of Croatia who was sentenced 3 times for corruption and as soon as he reaches half of one sentence, he is charged with the other", he emphasized, among other things, in a note on Facebook, Halit Valteri.

Ivo Sanader's conviction

Ivo Sanader, who served as Croatia's prime minister between 2003 and 2009, has been convicted of bribery, abuse of office, improper profit and corruption on various occasions.

2020 was also the last sentence for the former prime minister of Croatia. Ivo Sanader was sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of creating funds for his conservative HDZ party by taking money from public companies through a marketing agency.

In addition to the sentence, he was forced to transfer half a million euros to the state. According to the Croatian media, this was only part of the money that Sanader has pocketed during his political career. In the argumentation of the decision, more than 10 million euros were mentioned.

Sanader, now 69, was Croatia's prime minister from 2003 to 2009, when he left the post without giving any explanation.

In the retrial, the judge said that Sanader had organized a group of people to carry out criminal activities and cover up illegal financial deals.

Sanader is also serving another sentence, after he was convicted of bribery in 2008, after he had brokered the sale of a building belonging to one of his fellow party members to a ministry at a price higher than the market price.

He has also been convicted of accepting bribes from the Hungarian oil company MOL in 2008 in exchange for allowing the company to become a major shareholder in the Croatian energy company INA.
