The Chamber of Deputies in Italy approves the agreement with Albania for
Edi Rama and Giorgia Meloni

The Chamber of Deputies approved today (January 24) with 155 votes in favor and 115 against (2 abstentions) the draft law for the ratification of the Italy-Albania agreement on immigrants, "for strengthening cooperation in migration issues".

The agreement enters into force on the date agreed between the parties and remains in force for 5 years with the possibility of silent renewal unless one of the parties no longer wishes to do so.

Meanwhile, after the vote in the Chamber of Deputies, the draft law on the agreement is being considered in the Italian Senate.

Regarding the related costs, the draft law provides that the Italian side, within 90 days from the entry into force of the agreement, credits 16.5 million euros as an advance of a large amount of reimbursements related to the first year of application. Afterwards, the Albanian side will communicate to the Italian side the amount of expenses incurred.

Specifically, the law authorizes expenditures for the year 2024 aimed at creating the necessary structures and instrumental equipment, amounting to approximately 47.7 million euros. A fund has been created with a fund of 89.1 million euros for this year and 118.5 million euros for each of the years 2025-2028.

We recall that on November 6, 2023, Prime Minister Edi Rama and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signed in Rome the agreement for the construction of two centers for housing immigrants in Albania. According to the agreement, the landing port will be Shengjini, while Gjadri will be the camp where their accommodation will be built. The maximum host capacity is 3 thousand beds.
