In the heart of the Chiapas jungle, Mexico, archaeologists have discovered Sak-Bahlán, a lost city that for more than a century served as a bastion of resistance by the Lacandon Ch'ol Maya against Spanish conquest. The news was confirmed by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History, which calls the discovery one of the most significant in recent decades.

Sak-Bahlán, which in the Mayan language means "Land of the White Jaguar," was founded in 1586, after the Spanish conquered the capital Lakam Tun.

The city became a haven for rebels, who sometimes traded with the Spanish allies, and sometimes attacked and plundered them. This fragile balance was broken at the end of the 17th century, when colonial armies, with the help of several Mayan groups, managed to conquer it without a fight in 1695.

They named it "Nuestra Señora de los Dolores", but a few decades later the city was abandoned.

Its discovery today was no coincidence. Archaeologist Josuhé Lozada Toledo analyzed 17th-century chronicles, including a letter from friar Diego de Rivas, and through digital mapping technology determined the area where it could be located.

The search took the team to the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve, where they found stone structures, obsidian tools, pottery and the remains of a colonial church.

Sak-Bahlán was the penultimate Mayan capital to fall to the Spanish, just a few years before the conquest of Nojpetén in 1697.

According to experts, the discovery sheds light on the history of resistance, identity and daily life of indigenous communities, giving them a new place in the narrative of history.
