Success in medicine! The HIV virus is removed from the infected cell

Scientists say they have successfully eliminated the HIV virus from infected cells, using the Nobel Prize-winning Crispr gene-editing technology.

This technology does the work of scissors, but at the molecular level and manages to cut the DNA making it possible to deactivate or break it.

After this successful trial, scientists hope to be able to completely rid the human body of the virus, although work will still be needed to prove that this method is safe and effective.

Current treatments for the HIV virus, which causes AIDS, can stop the progression of the virus, but not eliminate it.

The University of Amsterdam team, which presented the test at a medical conference this week, stressed that their work is still in its early stages and that it will take time to become a cure for HIV.

Other scientists are also trying to use this technology against HIV. The company Excision BioTherapeutics says that after 48 weeks, 3 volunteers with HIV who underwent this intervention showed no serious side effects.

However, other researchers say it will be too challenging for this technology to attack all infected cells. Concerns have also been raised about long-term side effects.

The HIV virus attacks the cells of the immune system and uses them to multiply. Even if a sick person undergoes medical treatment and some people are declared "completely cured", the virus does not disappear, but remains hidden in the DNA, in a dormant state.

Most infected people take antiviral drugs throughout their lives, and if they stop taking them, the virus can reawaken and cause problems again.
