The concept of virginity in our country still remains taboo, but it seems that Albania is not the only country with this problem.
A girl originally from Great Britain has told her story, how she was forced to marry someone she didn't love, but first proving she was a virgin.
Farah was not only forced to marry, but also had to take the virginity test against her will. She was forced to undergo a virginity test before getting married at the age of 18.
"I didn't know it was a form of abuse. I felt ashamed for what they made me go through, and I carry that with me now," said Ferah.
Virginity testing is illegal in Britain, but charities that help women affected by honor-based abuse carry out the test.
Farah, who is not her real name, said her mother took her to a doctor in the community to see if she was clean.
“I was forced to marry when I was 18, with the hope of living with my husband's family. This is not what I wanted and they knew it. I resisted this until the last minute, but there was no change", said Ferah.
Farah said she was also "humiliated" on her wedding night when her bloody sheets were shown to her mother-in-law to prove she was a virgin.
What is virginity testing?
A virginity test is an illegal procedure that involves inspecting the hymen in the vagina in order to determine whether a woman or girl is a virgin.
But the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG) have said virginity tests have no scientific merit or clinical indication.
They say there is no known test that can prove whether a woman has had vaginal intercourse, because the hymen can break for reasons such as tampon use and exercise.
A BBC investigation in 2020 found that women were being offered controversial virginity tests in British medical clinics, with some advertising so-called "virginity repair", a procedure called hymenoplasty.

But her experiences have had a lasting impact and she wanted to share her story to raise awareness and help other young women who may face the same abuse.
"Not many communities will talk about it openly, but I know some girls have been through this but don't know where to go for help," she said.
The number of women affected by virginity testing in Britain is not widely known, as sex-related issues can be taboo in these communities.
Some people also don't recognize it as abuse or don't realize it's illegal and therefore don't come forward to report it.
