A virus frozen for 48,500 years has been 'brought back to life'

Scientists have discovered 7 types of viruses that were frozen and buried for thousands of years in the Siberian permafrost and brought them back to life in the laboratory, where they replicated.

Although it may seem very dangerous, according to the research team, this type of investigation is essential in the face of climate change, considering that the ice is melting faster and faster and the preserved organisms, perhaps evolved in the now extinct microsystems, can behave unpredictably and pose a threat to public health as they retain their infectious capacity.

Rising temperatures can actually cause the awakening of ancient pathogenic viruses.

The nearly 50,000-year-old virus is found at the bottom of the lake

The "younger" viruses had been frozen for 27,000 years, while the "older" one had been frozen for 48,500 years, making it the oldest virus ever to come back to life. "48,500 years is a world record for a virus," says Jean-Michel Claverie of the University of Aix-Marseille in France, who with his team had already brought back two other 30,000-year-old viruses from the remains of mammoths frozen in permafrost.

The 48,500-year-old virus originated in permafrost 16 meters below the bottom of a lake in Yukechi Alas, Yakutia, Russia. It is a type of pandoravirus - a giant virus that infects single-celled organisms known as amoeba, as tested in the laboratory (but this type of virus cannot infect plants or animals).

"If ancient giant viruses remain infectious after being frozen for so long, it is likely that other types of mammalian viruses will be infectious as well," says Claverie.

Contaminations

"While there were few people in the Arctic who were exposed to such threats of infection, more and more people are moving into these areas to mine resources such as gold and diamonds," adds Claverie. And the first step in mining is removing the upper layers of permafrost.

The risk is real but it is impossible to calculate.' Eric Delwart of the University of California, San Francisco believes that the risk of an ancient virus frozen in permafrost causing a pandemic is much lower than with viruses circulating between wild and domestic animals. Rebecca Katz from Georgetown University in Washington disagrees and believes the risk should be taken seriously./corriere.it
