The launch of Swatch's limited-edition "Royal Pop" watch has descended into chaos in several European countries and the US, forcing the company to temporarily close its stores after massive crowds, clashes and police intervention.

The "Royal Pop" watch, made in collaboration with Swiss luxury brand Audemars Piguet, caused a real fever among collectors and resellers, with people waiting for days outside stores to secure it.

In Paris, police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of about 300 people outside a Swatch store after the situation got out of control and security gates were damaged. French authorities said organizers had underestimated the necessary security measures.

Similar scenes were recorded in the UK. In London, police forces deployed police dogs near the Battersea and Westfield shopping centres, while in Birmingham a crowd dispersal order was activated. In Cardiff, a 25-year-old man was arrested during the incidents.

Footage posted on social media showed people pushing through security barriers and physical clashes outside stores in Manchester and the Trafford Centre. Swatch kept its Manchester and Liverpool stores closed on Sunday due to the situation.

In Italy, a fight broke out outside a Swatch store in Milan as soon as the doors opened, while in the Netherlands police intervened in a shopping mall near The Hague after hundreds of people flocked to the store.

The situation in the US was also tense. In New York's Times Square, there were delays and chaos among customers who had been waiting in line for days. Some buyers openly admitted that the intention was to immediately resell the watch at much higher prices.

The "Royal Pop" watch officially sells for around $400 in the US and £335 in the UK, but just hours after its launch it started appearing on eBay for up to £3,000.

A buyer in New York said he waited five days in line to secure the watch, which he then sold for $4,000.

Meanwhile, another customer said he would rather pay $2,400 per hour than face the queues and chaos.

After the incidents, Swatch was forced to react publicly by urging customers not to gather in large numbers near stores.
