"House swapping" is starting to become more and more popular. Until today, the undisputed dominant in short-term housing rentals are Airbnb-type platforms. However, this dominance is beginning to waver.
The attack on the "Airbnb model" is causing major upheaval, and communities are looking for an answer to overcrowding, homelessness and explosive rent growth that have worsened the housing crisis.
Repeated lockdowns due to the pandemic have left many travelers in their 20s and 30s craving what they consider an authentic experience: Staying in places longer, discovering neighborhoods unknown to the general public, and efforts to live like a native.
A relatively simple idea that has been around for years is starting to find application on a larger scale. Practically this is impossible if you consider the prices of plane tickets and the cost of accommodation. The high cost of living, which is hitting family budgets around the world, "curbs" the appetite for travel and vacations, but in the face of the problem, there are those who promise that they have a solution ready.
Why rent a vacation home abroad when you can just market your home for free?
This tactic isn't new — home exchange coordination sites like HomeExchange have been around for years — but given the financial situation, they're gaining in popularity.
The idea is relatively simple. You give your consent to market your property on one of the specialized websites and enjoy the privilege of staying at almost no cost on one of your trips by exchanging your home. A crucial detail. The first step you need to take is an application. The second step is to be accepted as a member of the community. All members must verify their identity before starting their trip. There is no membership fee other than a cleaning and service fee per trip as determined by the platform.
Loans are not allowed. This ensures that everyone is an equal member of the platform. The platform works with "units" defined by hosting and referrals. For each night of stay, one "unit" is credited to your profile. For every friend you refer who is accepted, you earn two "points". Unlike Airbnb-style short-term rental platforms, all members have to wait at their home to travel, so everyone can participate.
