In 2021, an animal was taken to a veterinary hospital where staff were unable to determine whether the animal was a dog or a fox, as it had characteristics of both species.
Genetic testing revealed that the animal had 76 chromosomes, a combination of a fox's 74 chromosomes and a dog's 78 chromosomes. This confirmed that the animal was a hybrid.

A recently published study revealed that the animal's mother was a fox and its father a domestic dog of an unknown breed.
Experts believe it is the first recorded case of an offspring from the breeding of a fox and a dog.

Unfortunately the unique animal died this year of unknown causes, but researchers believe there may be more hybrid creatures in the wild.
