EU issue: Doner kebab, Turkish or...German?

The European Commission has given Turkey and Germany six months to reach a compromise in their dispute over the recipe and origin of the doner kebab, reports the Economist.

Some time ago, Turkey submitted an application to register its most popular specialty in the European Union. Ankara has asked for very specific rules on how thin the doner meat slices should be, what the meat should consist of and that there should be a "specific standard" in its production.

But Germany protested against Turkey's proposal, claiming as its property the delicious food, which is actually identified with Turks.

"The kebab is part of Germany. Everyone here should be able to decide for themselves how they prepare it," said the federal minister of agricultural economy of Turkish origin, Cem Ezdemir. But German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also called the doner kebab a "German national dish" during his visit to Turkey in April.

Therefore, "the European Commission has given the parties six months to reach a compromise," says The Economist's report.

If Turkey and Germany do not reach an agreement within six months on the doner kebab issue, the decision will be taken by the European Commission itself.

If Turkey's position is adopted in Europe, then there would be a single EU standard for what might be called a doner kebab, something that restaurants and shops across Europe would have to adhere to as a standard.
