Commonly known as a heart attack, 80% of heart attacks "occur due to a blockage in one of the arteries of the heart as a result of a thrombosis or an atheromatous plaque, i.e. due to an accumulation of substances inside the wall of the artery, which ends blocking them.”

The stages of a heart attack are: the coronary arteries narrow, oxygen does not reach the myocardium, the myocardium, not receiving oxygen, cannot produce energy to move and tissue cells that do not receive blood die.

But not only by preventing risk factors are we safe from a heart attack, as we can suffer even without having any risk factors due to the "progressive accumulation of cholesterol and substances harmful to the arteries", says Spanish cardiologist Pablo Jorge Pérez.

"The older you are, the greater the risk of coronary heart disease," adds the expert.

Symptoms of a heart attack

Many people do not know that there are symptoms before a myocardial infarction that can warn that something is wrong: "The main symptom that should put us on alert is chest pain caused mainly by exertion and that goes away when we calm down or rest . Also, we should be concerned when we feel fatigue with minor exertions.

Another symptom is the inability to do exercises that we could do before because of chest pain or discomfort that starts in the center and usually goes to the left or right arm, shoulder or back.

The most typical symptom of a heart attack "is a tightness or pain that makes it difficult to breathe, with the tightness extending to the left arm or jaw and usually accompanied by a general malaise, cold sweats, pallor, vomiting and dizziness".

As Pérez points out, in most cases "not all symptoms appear, but a different combination of some of them". Other times, he adds, "it appears with pain in the upper abdomen, difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness."

If we have a heart attack, the first thing we should do is "call the emergency services immediately and stay calm". If it is another person who is suffering, "emergency will be called and the patient will be reassured by demonstrating safety and that everything is under control. He must be at complete rest and we must try not to move him by leaving him lying down, be vigilant and if he loses consciousness and has no pulse, start resuscitation maneuvers, with cardiac massage."
