An outbreak of salmonella in the United States of America has caused the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ask the population "not to hug or kiss their turtles".
This outbreak has affected 26 people in 11 states of the country, and public health authorities in the US have already announced that they are investigating, while the sale of turtles has been banned at the national level.
So far, no one has died, but at least 26 people have been affected, with nine of them hospitalized.
Any turtle can carry salmonella germs, but it is most common in small turtles with shells less than 10 cm, which are a known source of disease, especially in children.
Salmonellosis can cause various discomforts in affected people.
From fever, diarrhea and stomach problems.
Symptoms can begin anywhere from six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria, and most people are able to recover without treatment within a week, but some, especially children under 5 or adults over 65, may require care medical or hospitalization.
The CDC advises purchasing turtles with shells larger than 10 cm and that these be purchased from reputable stores. After touching or feeding the animal, it is very important to wash your hands.
In any case, the recommendation not to kiss or hug turtles extends to all turtle species, not just small ones, and that's because regardless of their size, they can have salmonella germs in their feces, as noted by the CDC
