SpaceX spacecraft crashes into the Moon

A powerful explosion on the Moon... at least that's what is believed to have happened when a piece of a SpaceX rocket that had been flying in space since last year was expected to crash into the surface of Earth's natural satellite at high speed.

Astronomer Dr. Matt Bothwell states that:

"It's going to cause a pretty big impact. There should be a cloud of dust thrown straight up into the sky, probably about 50 to 100 kilometers up. And it's going to leave a pretty big hole, probably about 30 meters wide or something like that. So, yeah, it's going to be a pretty big impact."

The school bus-sized object is the second stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that launched a lunar lander from Firefly Aerospace to the moon in January 2025.

Astronomer Bothwell said the impact would provide a rare opportunity for a controlled experiment on the Moon because the size of the rocket debris, its speed and the location of the impact are known.

"We don't have to worry about this collision. It will only cause a small defect on the Moon. It's exciting for astronomers to learn more about the Moon. It won't affect us here on Earth ," Bothwell continues.

Weighing 4 tons, the rocket body was supposed to hit the Moon at around 2:35 a.m., but none of the spacecraft orbiting the Moon were expected to be in position to capture live images of the impact.
