Olaf Scholz has been officially nominated as the Social Democrats' candidate for chancellor for the German elections, which will be held on February 23.

In fact, as the newspaper mdr.de reports, the vast majority of the 600 delegates – at the Social Democratic Party (SPD) conference in Berlin – voted in favor of the 66-year-old, in an open ballot.

In his speech, Scholz warned of the dangers of the CDU/CSU taking power.

He also stressed that the tax cuts promised by the Christian Democratic Party (CDU/CSU) would make it even easier for "millionaires and billionaires" and that "ordinary people will foot the bill with cuts in care, healthcare and pensions."

Furthermore, Scholz stated that the "disorderly situation" prevailing in the world requires a government with prudence, clarity and experience.

Scholz was unanimously nominated as the candidate for chancellor by the SPD's federal executive board in late November, despite criticism from the party's youth wing, the SPD Jusos.
