After fact-checkers, 'META' also ends "DEI" programs

Tech giant Meta has ended its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs, joining a growing group of US companies that are abandoning DEI initiatives.

Axios reports citing a memo to Meta employees explaining that the company is immediately halting its DEI programs for hiring, training, and supplier selection.

The company told employees that "the legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion efforts is changing," in a memo from vice president of human resources Janelle Gale.

"The term 'DEI' has also become controversial, in part because it is understood by some as a practice that suggests preferential treatment of some groups over others," Gale writes in the memo.

This decision by "Meta" comes after Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook and Instagram will discontinue their third-party fact-checking program, opting for a mechanism similar to the one used by "X".

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are organizational frameworks that aim to promote the fair treatment and full participation of all people, especially groups that have historically been underrepresented or subject to discrimination on the basis of identity or disability.

Critics have expressed concern that DEI programs have closed off employment opportunities to qualified individuals.
