The second round of elections in France has many surprises in store. The far-right National Front has failed to win a majority in the parliamentary elections.
Official results show a victory for the left-wing alliance New People's Front (NFP). President Macron's party came second and Le Pen third.
The country now faces the prospect of a parliament without an absolute majority, as the three groups have no tradition of working together.
After Le Pen's far-right party did well in the first round of the election, many left-wing or center-right candidates followed the tactic of withdrawing from the running to leave only one contender to take the anti-Le Pen vote, so as not to thus allowing the extremists to take power.
