Zelensky raises the alarm: Russia is preparing to destroy the hydroelectric dam
Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of planning to destroy a hydroelectric dam in the eastern Kherson region, where Ukrainian soldiers have been steadily advancing and Moscow-installed authorities have begun what they call civilian evacuations.

Zelensky accused Moscow of placing mines on a dam in the Russian-occupied region, posing a threat to a 400km long network of canals built by the Soviets.

"Russia is preparing to attack the Kakhovka hydropower plant. According to our information, the generators and the Kakhovka HPP dam have been mined by Russian terrorists," he said.

"If the dam is destroyed ... the North Crimea canal will simply disappear and that would be a catastrophe on a huge scale. With this terrorist attack, they can destroy, among other things, the possibility of supplying water from the Dnipro River to Crimea. "Such an attack on the Kakhovka HPP means exactly the same as using weapons of mass destruction," Zelenskiy added.
