Bulgaria and Greece launched a gas pipeline on Saturday that will help reduce Southeast Europe's dependence on Russian gas and increase energy security.

The 182-kilometer-long pipeline will provide relief to Bulgaria, which has struggled to secure gas at an affordable price since the end of April, when the Russian company Gazprom cut off supplies due to Sofia's refusal to pay in ruble (Russian currency).

Russia cut gas supplies to Europe after the West imposed sanctions on Moscow over its attack on Ukraine, leaving European Union countries struggling to secure alternative sources of supply amid rising prices.

"This pipeline marks an important moment for Bulgaria and for Europe's energy security. It means freedom, freedom from dependence on Russian gas," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said during an inauguration ceremony in Sofia attended by leaders from Bulgaria, Greece, Azerbaijan, Romania, Serbia and North Macedonia.

"Both here in Bulgaria and all over Europe, people are feeling the consequences of Russia's war. But thanks to projects like this, Europe will have enough gas for the winter," she said.

The Greece-Bulgaria pipeline (IGB) will ensure the transport of an amount of 1 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan to Bulgaria.

The pipeline can provide gas to Serbia, North Macedonia, Romania and further, Moldova and Ukraine.

It will transport gas from the northern Greek city of Komotini to Bulgaria's Stara Zagora. The pipeline is connected to another pipeline, part of the Southern Gas Corridor that transports gas from Azerbaijan to Europe.
