Greek media have published the tragic moment when the two trains collide head-on in Larissa. The impact is so strong that flames immediately erupt.
From what can be seen in the video, the trains were traveling on the same track, at a speed of 166 km/h, making it impossible to avoid the collision.
At least 40 people lost their lives in this fatal accident. 85 others were injured, 6 of them in serious condition.
The tragic event happened shortly after 23:00 local time. A passenger train carrying about 350 people was involved in the accident, along with a freight train. In addition to the fire, 3 carriages of the passenger train ended up derailing.
The Greek authorities put in handcuffs at noon the person in charge of the railway station in Larissa, while the investigation into the serious incident continues.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Kostas Karamanlis, has also resigned.
"I have been contributing to politics for several years, but I consider it an important element of democracy that the citizens of our country still have faith in our political system. This is called political responsibility. For this reason, I am resigning as Minister of Infrastructure and Transport. This is the least I can do as a sign of respect", writes Karamanlis.
