A few hours after the most serious railway accident in Greece where 40 people lost their lives and dozens more were injured, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Kostas Karamanlis, has also resigned.

"I have been contributing to politics for several years, but I consider it an important element of democracy that the citizens of our country still have faith in our political system. This is called political responsibility. For this reason, I am resigning as Minister of Infrastructure and Transport. This is the least I can do as a sign of respect", writes Karamanlis.

Earlier, the area of the serious accident where two trains collided at a speed of over 150 km/h was visited by Prime Minister Mitsotakis, who expressed his commitment to clarifying this serious event and bringing those responsible to justice.

Until now, the head of the railway station of Larisa has been arrested, who for minutes did not notice that the passenger train and the freight train were on the same tracks.

The rail accident happened shortly before midnight near Tempe where the first two cars of the train burst into flames due to the heavy impact.

Many of the victims are reported to have been young people who were going to attend a party.
