Germany ready to ban unhealthy food advertising to children

German Agriculture Minister Cem Ozdemir called for a ban on all food advertising that is not healthy for children.

The minister's proposal is about sweets, foods with a high content of salt, sugar or fat. The consumption of these foods by children is related to the development of obesity, diabetes or other diseases.

Relevant ads on TV, radio, YouTube and Instagram must only be broadcast between 11pm and 6am.

Also, advertisements for sweets on posters near schools and children's activity centers will be banned.

Consumer groups, as reported by the Guardian, are calling for a ban on placing these foods where they can be seen by children. These products are usually placed near the cash registers so that children can see them and beg their parents to buy them something before paying.

One in two Germans, as well as 15% of children in the country, are overweight, according to health scientists in the country.

Ozdemir said he would seek cross-party support for the plan, though he expects to face resistance. The plan was included in the agreement for the formation of the coalition government by the Social Democrats, the Greens and the FDP.
