Five people lost their lives, including a 7-year-old girl, while crossing the British Channel in the early hours of Tuesday. According to French officials, the migrants were trying to get to the UK on an overcrowded boat with at least 112 people on board.

Authorities say the boat ran aground after leaving the coast of Wimereux, near Boulogne, before continuing on. One of the volunteers in the area who went to their aid, told reporters that the father saw his little daughter die in front of his eyes.

The prefect of Pas-de-Calais, where Wimereux is located, said the boat had left Plage des Allemands with "an unprecedented number of 112 people on board".

The overloaded boat appeared in distress a few hundred meters from the beach after touching down on the sand. Its engines stopped and two people fell into the water next to the boat, French authorities said.

Patrol boats immediately went to their aid, to save those on board. When they arrived 7 people were unconscious and in distress.

6 of them were transported to the shore, but despite the quick help that was given to them, they did not manage to survive.

The BBC says that in total the French authorities rescued 47 people, while another 57 stayed on the boat and refused to return.

"They managed to restart the engine and decided to continue their journey to the United Kingdom, under maritime surveillance," French authorities said.
