Ukraine halts Russian offensive in southeast

On Saturday Ukrainian forces fought to prevent the progress of Russia's military troops in the southeast of the country. The Kremlin is making efforts to invade the industrial region of Donbass. Western military analysts say the Moscow offensive is going much slower than predicted.

On the other hand, the United Nations is continuing efforts to mediate the evacuation of civilians from the devastated city of Mariupol, a port city in southern Ukraine, which Russia has been trying to take control of since the start of the attack on the country more than nine weeks ago.

Residents at a steel plant in Mariupol are begging to escape, Mayor Vadym Boichenko said Friday. The factory has been converted into the last bastion of the city's defence and there are about 2,000 fighters, as well as about 1,000 civilians.

In an interview for China's state news agency "Xinhua" Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Russian and Ukrainian negotiators speak almost daily. But progress added it has not been easy.

Air strikes and artillery barricades have made the movement of journalists extremely dangerous and this has made it difficult to secure a full picture of the fighting in the east. Both Ukraine and Moscow-backed rebels fighting in the east are implementing strict restrictions on reports from areas of fighting.

From a numerical point of view, Russia's military power far exceeds that of Ukraine. In the days before the start of the war, according to Western intelligence, Moscow had positioned 190,000 troops near the border, while Ukraine's permanent army accounted for about 200,000 troops.

Russian and separatist forces appear to have made small advances in Donbas since the moment Moscow announced it would focus its military force on eastern Ukraine.

This development comes partly due to strong Ukrainian resistance. According to a senior U.S. defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Washington believes the Russians are at least a few days behind with their targets as they try to surround Ukrainian troops in the east.

The British Defence Ministry offered a similar assessment, saying it believes Russian forces in Ukraine are likely facing a weakening of morale in their ranks as well as unstable air support. But British officials did not give details of where they had based these assessments.
