Germany has filed a lawsuit against Italy in the UN High Court because Rome still allows victims of Nazi war crimes to seek compensation from the German state even after a previous ruling that such charges violate international law.

Germany's request to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), published on the court's website on Friday evening, says Italy still allows claims for damages before domestic courts, despite the 2012 ICJ ruling that it has violated Berlin's right to immunity under international law.

Germany states that since the 2012 decision, more than 25 new claims have been filed in Italy for compensation against the German state for damages caused by Nazi crimes during World War II. In many of these cases, the courts ordered Germany to pay damages.

To settle lawsuits in two such cases, Italian courts are attempting to seize German property in Rome.

Germany says it has now filed a lawsuit with the ICJ because an Italian court said it would decide by May 25 whether to force the sale of the buildings, some of which house German cultural, archaeological, historical and educational institutions.

Kjo pasoi një sërë kërkesash të ngjashme kompensimi.

Germany has claimed to have already compensated for injustices in World War II in extensive peace and reparations agreements with affected countries, paying billions of euros since the end of the war with the defeat of the Nazi regime in 1945.
