Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited the White House in the hope of convincing the US President about Tomahawk missiles, but his phone call with Putin a day earlier risks the Ukrainian leader returning home empty-handed.

Trump said he hopes the war ends without Ukraine needing the Tomahawk missiles. Such a move, Trump said, would constitute a major escalation: “Tomahawks are very dangerous weapons. They’re incredible weapons. If you like war, they’re one of the most accurate. You know, we used 30 Tomahawks on Iran after the B2s did their damage. They’re incredible weapons, but they’re also very dangerous. And that could mean escalation, could mean a lot of bad things could happen. Tomahawks are a big deal.”

But while Trump expressed optimism about a quick end to the war in Ukraine, Zelensky warned that Putin is ready for peace: "I think this is a moment to end Russia's war against Ukraine. I think, yes, we understand that Putin is not ready, I think he is not ready, but I am convinced that with your help, we can stop this war. And we really need it. We see that they have not made any successful steps on the battlefield, and that is a good thing."

In his meeting with Zelensky, Trump ruled out the possibility of a trilateral meeting in Budapest.

"These two leaders don't like each other, we want everyone to feel comfortable," the American President asserted, adding that the meetings will be separate.
