Prince Andrew has renounced his royal titles, including that of Duke of York. Andrew himself announced the decision in a statement signed by Buckingham Palace, specifying that the decision was made "after discussions with the King."

This marks the end of any chance of "recovery" for Elizabeth's third child, who has become an increasingly embarrassing figure for the Royal Family.

"In discussions with the King and my immediate and extended family, we have concluded that the ongoing allegations against me are distracting attention from the work of Her Majesty and the Royal Family ," the prince explains in the document.

The reference is obviously to the scandal involving Epstein, the billionaire paedophile who was his friend, and the allegations of sexual abuse of minors that directly affected him. The relationship between Andrew and the American millionaire was embarrassing for the royal family and is believed to have lasted much longer than the prince himself would like to believe.

According to the latest files released on the relationships and conversations of the millionaire, who died in prison in 2019, the prince remained in contact with Epstein at least until 2015, through joint business deals and visits to the millionaire's villas.

Overwhelmed by the allegations of Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of raping her when she was still a minor (the girl had been taken to one of Epstein's residences as one of the sex slaves "available to guests"), Andrew had already retreated into private life in 2019, giving up his public roles in the Royal Family but retaining the title of Duke of York.

The Queen was still alive. Even then, there was an official statement in which the prince announced that he was withdrawing while proclaiming his innocence.

The situation was exacerbated by an embarrassing television interview Andrew gave to the BBC in November 2019. It was supposed to be an attempt to assert his version of events, but the prince’s alibis were shattered with the words: “I don’t remember.” The interview was so disastrous that it was made into a television series called “Scoop.”

In the years that followed, after several attempts to regain public and royal credibility, thanks in part to his position as the Queen's "favourite son" (while she was alive), the situation deteriorated and relations with Charles, who had since become sovereign, deteriorated.

Additionally, the suicide of Virginia Giuffre and new details about the connection between Epstein and Andrew led to today's decision.

“With Her Majesty’s consent, we believe that I must now take a further step forward. Accordingly, I will no longer use my title or the honours bestowed upon me. As I have already said, I firmly deny the allegations against me.”

This is the conclusion of the official document. The step forward, as he says, is in reality a final step back, distancing him from the rest of the family in all public appearances.

Assuming Charles and William will want to continue to tolerate him in private life as well.
