A Cypriot businessman, Stavros Demosthenous , who was also the president of the Karmiotissa football team, was murdered on Friday morning in Limassol.

The perpetrators appear to have been aware of the businessman's movements, as according to initial information, they approached his car and fired a volley of shots.

They opened fire on him and, after making sure he was dead, fled in an unknown direction.

A short time later, a burnt-out car was found in another part of Limassol, which was allegedly used by the perpetrators and then burned to destroy evidence.

Police have launched a search to find the perpetrators of the crime, although it is possible that they were professional killers who had taken on the murder on behalf of others.

In this context, the possibility that the murder is related to betting activity on football matches is being examined, as "Karmiotissa" has been under investigation several times for match-fixing by UEFA.
