US President Donald Trump has had a long phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump said the call was "good and productive" and added that he and Putin will meet soon in Hungary.
The head of the White House stated that high-level advisers from Washington and Moscow will meet next week.
"President Putin and I will meet next in Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can end this inglorious war between Russia and Ukraine," he says.
Trump also promised that he will discuss his conversation with Putin today tomorrow, in his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymor Zelenskyy.
The call comes at a crucial moment, just a day before Trump's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
The talks with the two leaders, Russian and Ukrainian, come as Trump is considering the possibility of giving Ukraine Tomahawk missiles, long-range weapons that can hit important targets inside Russian territory.
The Kremlin has not yet issued an official statement on the content of the conversation or the possibility of a new meeting between the two leaders.
The last meeting between Trump and Putin took place on August 15 in Alaska, where the two tried to find a path to a peace agreement over the war in Ukraine, but without apparent success.
Trump, who during the election campaign promised to end the war in Ukraine within days, has recently admitted that resolving the conflict has been more difficult than he had anticipated.
Meanwhile, relations with Zelensky have improved significantly in recent months, and Friday's meeting in Washington is expected to focus on US military support for Kiev, including Ukraine's request for Tomahawk missiles.
Trump has now reversed his position and said Ukraine could regain all of its territory within its borders, a stance that contradicts his previous statements. A new meeting between Trump and Putin could be crucial for the future of the war and for international peace efforts.
